They fail because compatibility details were assumed rather than verified. Here are the five checkpoints we use on real Oracle-to-KingbaseES projects.

1. Syntax compatibility is not behaviour compatibility

V9 ships an Oracle-compatible mode that covers most PL/SQL syntax, data types and pseudo-columns. What still needs testing is the edge behaviour: empty string versus NULL, implicit type conversion limits, and where NULLs land when sorting.

2. Fix the top SQL first

Export the top 200 statements from production, replay them on V9, and compare plans and timings. In most projects this single step surfaces the majority of performance risk.

3. Confirm transaction and locking semantics

Default isolation level, the waiting behaviour of SELECT FOR UPDATE, and DDL lock granularity should be exercised with a concurrency script. Intermittent timeouts after cutover usually trace back here.

4. Rehearse backup, restore and failover

Run a full physical backup, a logical backup, and a primary/standby switchover, then record measured RTO and RPO. Tooling is conceptually close to RMAN but not command-compatible, so runbooks must be rewritten rather than copied.

5. Turn the results into a go-live checklist

Compatibility findings, before/after SQL timings, concurrency test results and switchover records should all be signed off. A migration is finished when the checklist is complete, not when the schema loads.

Run these five checkpoints and the risk of a KingbaseES V9 migration becomes measurable instead of a post-launch surprise.

Migrations to KingbaseES V9 rarely fail because the database cannot be installed.
